Polydome Limited - Relocating to Offaly Pays Off
Polydome Limited in Birr is one of Ireland's leading manufacturers and suppliers of standard and custom-made polytunnels, glasshouses and accessories to commercial and domestic customers. The company services a wide range of customers and contracts, large and small, including State bodies, local authorities, commercial and domestic growers.
Polydome has its own modern workshop with CAD equipment to design and produce to customer specifications. In addition to manufacturing, Polydome are agents for polytunnels and glasshouses from leading companies in Europe. Construction and technical assistance services are available.
In 1985, Johnathan, living in Dublin and fresh out of school, decided to start his own business. Almost all the business ideas he investigated - mushroom growing, a geranium nursery, aquaculture - required polytunnels and he decided to manufacture them from a small workshop in Dublin. He needed more space to develop but rents were too high, so the business remained very small for years. A major urban city had limited demand for polytunnels.
Polydome's location in Birr came by chance. "One day, I was telling my woes to a customer from Birr when he made me an offer out of the blue; to relocate my business in the extensive grounds of his Georgian guest house. He suggested I try it for three years to see if I liked the rural lifestyle and I jumped at the offer."
Offaly offered enhanced opportunities due to its location and potential market for his products. It also offered a better quality of life for him and his young family. Jonathan never looked back. "At first, business was slow to develop and finances were tight. But the setting was idyllic, the lifestyle was pleasant, and I had the space I needed to develop the company." In 1996, after the three year trial, he acquired his own premises outside Birr and suddenly the business took off. With sufficient workspace, Jonathan was able to reactive contracts that he had to turn down in Dublin due to lack of space. He secured some good agencies, including Filclair in France, one of the leading suppliers of polytunnels in the world.
"Initially, they considered us too small, but were soon impressed by our sales growth - faster than any of their U.K. dealers - and awarded us the agency. Now we are one of their top dealers in the world.
With the help of Offaly County Enterprise Board, Polydome purchased the technology to manufacture polytunnels on a commercial basis, with the flexibility to handle customised orders. "The Enterprise Board has been very supportive and helpful, with a refreshing absence of red tape bureaucracy," he says. "They're tuned in to small business owner/managers and give good practical advice that's based on the realities of running a small business."
